Manchester United Legend To Return As Under-23 Manager? Jose Mourinho Will Have Some Input

Manchester United open to bringing Paul Scholes back as Under-23 manager

Scholes, 41, hung up his boots for a second and final time in 2013 but Manchester United are on the look out for a new Under-23s manager.

Warren Joyce left to join Championship outfit Wigan last month after eight years in charge of United's reserves.

The Daily Mail claim United would be happy to talk with former Red Devil Scholes about the vacant role, but have not made him a priority candidate.

Scholes' former team-mate Nicky Butt, now head of United's youth academy, has been placed in temporary charge of the Under-23s until the club find a permanent replacement.

Butt will reportedly work alongside club secretary John Alexander and senior academy figure John Murtagh to find Joyce's successor but will not rush into a decision.

Paul Scholes previously managed Manchester United's Under-19s alongside Nicky Butt

The report adds that United manager Jose Mourinho will have some input in the appointment but executive vice chairman Ed Woodward will have the final say.

Scholes previously worked alongside Butt as joint coach of United's Under-19s and has run training sessions for a number of United's youth levels before.

The former England star, who won 11 Premier League titles for United, is open to the idea of going into management and previously admitted a youth side could be a foot in the door.

He said back in September: "I really don’t know if I’ll ever manage. I’ve done my Uefa B licence. I haven’t done the A licence.

"I will get it done. But I’m just wondering, is it worth it? I haven’t had any major offers. I had one offer from Oldham a couple of years ago.

"But you have to start somewhere; if you get your coaching badge you start doing a youth team, doing something first, and if you like it then you take it from there, I suppose.

"I haven’t done it enough to like it or not like it really. I think if I really got into it, I could enjoy it.

"But I wouldn’t be one who’d be worried about losing his job for not playing the right way.

"I suppose you never know, though. But if you’re doing it the way that you think it should be, if people are paying to watch, I’d want to entertain."
