Jose Mourinho Reckons He Found The Answer To Paul Pogba's Problems As Arsenal Snatch Draw

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the Premier League at Old Trafford

Mourinho put himself under massive pressure once he spent a world record £89m on landing Pogba from Juventus in the summer.

To make matters worse he has struggled to find the French ace’s best position, with Pogba failing to make a big impact.

But it turns out maybe he had the perfect solution right under his nose all along in the shape of Michael Carrick.

United have been crying out for the mature skills of Carrick all season, but Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal was just his second league start of the campaign.

Yet his return to the team has seen a big improvement in the performances of United and Pogba - to give fans hope that Mourinho’s men will challenge for honours.

Carrick’s holding midfield role allows Pogba to get forward more and cause damage to rival defences.

He has made such an impact that United want to offer him a 12-month contract extension at the ripe old age of 35.

Carrick and Pogba, along with the impressive Ander Herrera, dominated the midfield battle against the Gunners as United outplayed Arsene Wenger’s men from start to finish without being able to secure the win they deserved.

Juan Mata fired United ahead with a pinpoint finish after the break only for Gunners substitute Olivier Giroud to snatch a point with a towering header in the final minute of normal time.

It felt like a defeat for Mourinho but at least he reckons he has found the answer to his costly conundrum

Paul Pogba has impressed in his two starts with Michael Carrick for Manchester United

He said: “The midfield is playing very well. Pogba, Carrick and Herrera are playing very well.

“Pogba is adapting much better in relationships, with the intensity of the competition and he’s much more confident.

“Obviously he plays with some guidelines over his position, but at the same time with some freedom to occupy some attacking areas where he feels and thinks he can be important.

“He’s comfortable on the pitch. That’s the best way of saying it. Michael is such a fantastic player and it’s a pity about his age, because I always loved him.

“Instead of being his manager when he was 25, I’m his manager when he is 35. But we have a good understanding.

“We know when he can play. We know when he’s ready and when he needs a rest. I’m still having Michael Carrick, probably for one more season.”

Giroud’s dramatic leveller means the Gunners have still not lost since the opening day of the season and the Frenchman is pushing hard to return to Wenger’s starting line-up.

Wenger admits resilience and harmony within his squad will be the key factors to the Gunners maintaining a title challenge.

“The resilience was the main thing and we kept our composure as well, even at the end. I believe there’s a great harmony in the squad,” he said.

“The players who come on make a difference every time and that’s not a coincidence. That is down to attitude and overall I took some gambles as well.
