Arsenal Legend: I Never Believed In This Gunners Gaffer

The former striker cemented his place in Gunners folklore by scoring 185 goals in 288 games in north London.

And he played under three managers during that seven-year spell.

George Graham took Wright to Highbury from cross-city rivals Crystal Palace in 1991.

And he won three trophies while the ex-Arsenal star was at the helm.

After the 71-year-old left the club in 1995 he was replaced by Rioch.

But the former Bolton boss’ time at Arsenal was to be much less fruitful

He lasted just one season with the 13-time top flight champions, guiding them to a disappointing fifth-place Premier League finish.

In the summer of 1996 he was replaced by Arsene Wenger.

Now, writing for The Sun, Wright has given his verdict on the veteran Frenchman’s two immediate predecessors.

"At Arsenal, I never really believed in Bruce Rioch," he said. "I appreciated everything he did at Bolton but I wasn’t having him as my manager at Arsenal.

"Yet when George Graham was in charge, he would demand I help defend from the front, not something I enjoyed terribly I can assure you.

"But when we saw how much it helped the likes of Tony Adams and Steve Bould in the back four and when we got results from it, the penny dropped."

Wenger has of course outlasted both Graham and Rioch, recently celebrating 20 years in charge of Arsenal.
