Arsene Wenger has hailed Lucas Perez’s fighting spirit after the Arsenal striker scored twice in the League Cup ahead of Saturday’s clash against Chelsea.
The uncapped Spanish forward opened his Gunners account at Nottingham Forest with two goals in the north London side’s 4-0 victory in the third round on Tuesday night.
Perez moved to Arsenal in a £17m deal from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in August as Wenger added much-needed depth to his attacking options at the Emirates Stadium.
And the Gunners boss explained why he was particularly impressed with Perez’s second goal in their comfortable victory over the two-time European Cup winners.
“The second goal has technical quality and desire, determination and fighting spirit. I liked the second goal for that, I liked as well the goal he made for Oxlade-Chamberlain. I’m very pleased for him,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.
Perez will be hoping to start just his second Premier League game since the centre-forward’s big-money switch when Chelsea make the trip to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
The 27-year-old has racked up just 64 minutes of top-flight action so far against Southampton and Hull City.
The Gunners are in fourth place in the Premier League table behind leaders Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.
