Paul Pogba makes his long-awaited return to the field for Manchester United–following four years at Juventus and a world-record transfer back to Old Trafford–going right into the starting lineup as the Red Devils host Southampton in their home opener (3 p.m. ET, USA).
Manchester United beat Bournemouth 3-1, with Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic making a winner out of Jose Mourinho in his return to the Premier League, and Pogba will look to enjoy that same fate as his side takes on the Saints, who drew Watford 1-1 to open their campaign.
Mourinho said not to expect Pogba to play 90 minutes or turn in a super performance, tempering expectations for the day, but the spotlight is always bright at the Theater of Dreams, and Manchester United will aim to please for a second straight week.
Pogba might have been consumed by nerves early on, springing Southampton for an early counterattack after this mistake with his first touches:
Much is expected of Zlatan in England – so it’s no surprise that he got United off and running in the game with an outstanding header.
It came after a great cross from Wayne Rooney into the box, where Zlatan rose high above Jose Fonte to power the ball beyond Fraser Forster and into the net.
