DUBAI // A Nigerian woman was arrested while carrying more than five kilograms of marijuana hidden in dough, Dubai Criminal Court was told.
The woman, 24, arrived at Dubai International Airport on May 22 this year. Customs inspectors found dough inside one of her bags while searching her luggage.
"She said she didn’t know about the dough and that the bag did not belong to her but to a man in her country who asked her to deliver it to a compatriot in Dubai," said a female customs inspector.
The woman informed investigators that a man should have been waiting for her to pick up the bag in Al Muraqqabat area.
Police arrested the man after watching him for more than five hours.
Officers said he confessed to being offered Dh1,000 in return for picking up a bag from the woman and delivering it to a countryman in Ajman.
The pair denied a charge of possessing drugs to sell, while the man denied an additional charge of consuming drugs.
"The bag doesn’t belong to me and I don’t know who placed the drugs inside it," said the woman.
The man, 23, told judges that traces of drugs found in his body were from medicine he was prescribed.
The next hearing will be on September 5.
