Reports indicates that two fresh infections of wild polio virus have been discovered in Borno state. This new discovery threatens Nigeria’s desired status to be a polio free Country. Nigeria was on course to be declared polio free by the World Health Organisation by July 24 next year if there was no new case reported.
The last know infection was July 2014 and this status was maintained throughout the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Muhammadu Buhari led administration since its swearing in, has not released any fund for the purchase of Vaccines. This fact was disclosed by Dr Aminu Magashi who confirmed ; “We have less than five months to the end of 2016 yet nothing has been released for immunization, for procurement of vaccines and other logistics”.
“As a nation we cannot continue to depend on development partners to buy the vaccines we need in the country yet we have funds for such purposes in our budget.
Only last week, civil society organisations raised concerns that an amount of about N12.8 billion immunization fund was yet to be released only four months to the end of 2016.
Dr Aminu Magashi is the director for Community Health and Research Initiative which is part of the coalition Partnership for Advocacy for Child and Family Health, PACFaH.
